A Legal Workshop for Parents and Parents To Be

Journalist Jacoba Urist and lawyer Samiya (Simi) Mir will talk you through some important legal issues involved in parenting including choosing and documenting a guardian, what you should know about trusts and estates, laws you should be aware of when hiring a nanny, and your employment rights before, during, and after maternity or paternity leave.  Come for an informative discussion on various legal topics relevant to parents and parents to be.

Topics discussed will include:

Jacoba Urist:
Jacoba Urist is a journalist who specializes in health, education and culture news. Currently, she is a contributing reporter for NBCNews and The Today Show and a contributing journalist at The Atlantic. Because of her legal education, she has also taken a particular interest in personal finance and policy issues for families. Her work has been published by Newsweek/TheDailyBeast, Time, The New York Times, Forbes & the Wall Street Journal.
Jacoba attended Johns Hopkins University for both her BA in political science and MA from the Institute of Health and Social Policy. She is a graduate of New York University where she received her JD and LL.M. in taxation, concentrating on estate and trust law. She has written for a wide range of parenting sites and magazines about how to buy life insurance, choose a guardian, and set up a trust for young families, and has practiced as a tax attorney.

Samiya Mir:
Samiya (Simi) Mir handles a wide variety of cases in the areas of employment law, commercial and civil litigation, and business law.  Her practice includes counseling both U.S. and multinational businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals on a wide variety of matters including   litigation, employment, Department of Labor audits, corporate compliance, contract negotiation, and copyright and licensing.  Ms. Mir's firm also specializes in Immigration Law, practiced by her partner David Katona.
Ms. Mir earned her bachelor's degree in political science at Colgate University and graduated cum laude from American University, Washington College of Law. Upon graduation from law school, she served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Vanessa Ruiz, D.C. Court of Appeals. Simi worked at the law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver and Jacobson from 2001 to 2004, where she practiced trial and appellate litigation and represented businesses and individuals on cases involving securities, white collar crime, and breach of contract.  She also served as a staff attorney at The Legal Aid Society, Criminal Defense Division.  Ms. Mir serves as an adjunct professor of law at Fordham University Law School and taught contracts and business law in Milan, Italy from 2002-2004.
